Head scarves have been an essential clothes accessory for women and men for centuries. It’s one of the most basic pieces of clothing you can own, and can wear anywhere in the world. Head scarves never go out of fashion and are extremely versatile.

Famous film stars like Audrey Hepburn to public figures like the Queen wear head scarves for style and practicality. If it’s windy outside then a head scarf will help prevent your newly styled and dressed hair from being blown into something resembling a birds’ nest. If you’re unexpectedly caught in a rain shower, head scarves can protect your hair from being soaked through too.

It doesn't matter whether your scarf is a basic plain cotton one or a highly expensive silk scarf, they are one of the most versatile items of clothing you can have in your wardrobe. It’s no surprise that women tend to have chests of drawers dedicated to their collection of head scarves. And you don’t need to use knots to tie them you can also secure scarves with stylish clips or a fancy brooch.

Head scarves are easy to wear and are normally either a perfectly square shape or a long length of fabric rectangle. The most basic way to fold your square scarf is to simply fold it into a triangle and place the long edge over the top of your forehead, tying the long points of the triangle behind and under your hair at the bottom of your neck. Or you can wear them the other way up with the knot tied on top of your head. The classic Channel look is achieved by starting with the basic triangle but making one end longer than the other and criss-crossing the ends before knotting it and allowing the long ends to drape down.

Scarves aren’t just to wear on your head you can experiment with them and wear them as belts in pirate-fashion, around your neck to keep warm, to accentuate a neckline on a coat of dress, or if you’ve a large, summer scarf for the beach, wear it as a wraparound skirt, or even as a halter-neck top. Halter necks scarves are easily folded over then the ends tied around your neck and the other corners behind your middle or back.

5 Reasons to Tie-up Wayward Hair

Head fashion has been making a come-back with a range of stylish materials and versatile looks available to help keep your hair under wrap. Whether you have long locks that get in the way of your daily chores or short hair that needs a fashion fix, there are loads of reasons to tie up those tangles and look great:

  • Practicality - Boho chic was all the rage a few years ago but when you are doing the dishes or dealing with the children it can get in the way of your daily routine. Hair bobbles only tie up the length of the hair, for wispy and wayward hair a cotton bandana can keep your hair in place.
  • Time Management - With our busy lifestyles, who has time to detangle their knotted locks and when you are not attending a special occasion can you really be bothered to iron out the kinks in your frizz? The simple solution comes in the form of head scarves that can be easily adapted for different styles of hair.
  • Protect – We have all been guilty of over-drying, curling, straightening and using too many lotions and potions on our hair so it is no surprise that these have a damaging effect making our hair weaker. Give your head a break every week; wear headscarves instead of styling to keep your hair healthy.
  • Style – You only have to take a look at Sarah Jessica Parker to see that the fashion forward woman knows how to dress her head with the latest turban trends that are practical and stylish.
  • Comfort – By covering your head you automatically reduce the vast amounts of heat lost from your head. Head scarves, hats and caps can provide comfort in a range of soft materials and keep you warm all year round.
